Voices of Burma is ...
An organization committed to bringing awareness to issues related to Burma through creative activism. VOB started after Deanna Scott went to Thailand on a study abroad program through Trent University in Ontario. During a volunteer placement she collaborated with professional artists from Burma to create the initiative. This collaboration came out of her research on empowerment techniques among children. When she saw what a positive impact art had on the children, she wanted to continue to use this medium to allow their voices to be heard.
All the art is created by migrant and refugee children and adults. We fundraise for educational initiatives, art projects and to help professional artists become internationally recognized. There are seven professional artists involved in the project and several schools representing Umphieum Refugee Camp and migrant schools in Mae Sot, Thailand.
Voices of Burma is active nationally and has one university chapter at Trent University with others soon to follow.
The mandates of VOB are as follows:
Generate awareness about Burma and its peoples.
Help fund the Migrant Children's Art Project
Help fundraise for a new Art Centre in Mae Sot, due to open June 2008
Actively employ and promote creative methods of resistance.
The use the consensus-decision making model within the group and its affiliates.
To find constructive ways to become allies in the struggle against the military dictatorship in Burma.
Network with other groups in Canada and internationally
